Memorialization

Memorialization is the creation of practices, objects, and places that commemorate the dead. It preserves memory while giving grief and public remembrance a shared form.

Commemoration: The public or collective act of recalling and honoring a person, event, or group. Memorialization gives commemoration durable forms, from ceremonies to monuments.
Funeral: A ceremony or observance marking a person's death and disposition of their body. Funerals are immediate, ritualized occasions for commemorating the dead.
Mourning: The social and personal practices through which people respond to death. Memorialization can extend mourning beyond its immediate rituals.
Counter-memorial: A memorial designed to challenge conventional monumentality or fixed official narratives. Counter-memorials resist the certainty and permanence often claimed by traditional memorials.
Ritual: A repeated, symbolic sequence of actions governed by shared conventions. Funerals and anniversaries turn remembrance into repeated communal action.
Cenotaph: A monument honoring someone whose remains are elsewhere or unrecovered. Cenotaphs commemorate the dead without containing their remains.
Postmemory: A later generation's relationship to traumatic experiences transmitted through stories and images. Memorials transmit memories of deaths to people without direct experience of them.
Monumentalism: The use of imposing monuments to assert authority, permanence, or collective identity. Some memorials reject monumental scale in favor of uncertainty and participation.
Collective memory: Shared representations of the past maintained by a group. Memorials help communities select and transmit accounts of the dead.
War memorial: A monument or site commemorating people who died in war. War memorials turn individual losses into public and national remembrance.
