Memory politics

Memory politics is the struggle over how societies publicly interpret, commemorate, or suppress the past. It shapes collective identity, historical responsibility, and the visibility of past harms.

Collective memory: Shared representations of the past that help groups understand their identity and history. Memory politics contests which shared accounts become publicly authoritative.
Holocaust remembrance: Public practices of remembering and teaching the genocide of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. Its institutions and rituals show how remembrance can become a civic responsibility.
