Menippean satire

Menippean satire is a comic mode that mixes prose and verse, parody and stylistic shifts to test ideas and expose intellectual or social follies.

Menippus of Gadara: A third-century BCE Greek Cynic philosopher whose lost satirical works gave Menippean satire its name. His lost works supplied the mode’s ancient namesake and model.
Apocolocyntosis: A Latin satire traditionally attributed to Seneca that mocks the deification of the emperor Claudius. Its mock-epic mixture and political ridicule make it a prominent ancient example.
Varro: A Roman scholar and writer whose Menippean satires combined prose and verse; the works survive only in fragments. His Roman adaptations helped carry Menippus’s mixed form into Latin literature.
Horatian satire: A satirical mode that uses urbane wit and good-humored criticism to correct human folly. Its measured social correction contrasts with Menippean satire’s disruptive mixtures and intellectual targets.

Seneca the Younger: A Roman Stoic philosopher, dramatist, and political writer who composed the satire Apocolocyntosis. His Claudius satire offers an influential imperial-era use of the mode.
Juvenalian satire: A satirical mode marked by indignation, moral severity, and attacks on corruption or abuse. Its sustained moral anger differs from the mode’s shifting comic voices.
Dialogism: Mikhail Bakhtin’s account of meaning as shaped by interaction among distinct social voices and viewpoints. The mode’s competing styles and ideas exemplify dialogic conflict.
