Mescaline

Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid found in peyote and several other cacti. It alters perception, mood, and cognition primarily through serotonin receptors.

Serotonin 5-HT2A receptor: A serotonin receptor subtype that helps regulate perception and cognition and mediates effects of many classic psychedelics. Mescaline’s psychedelic effects are associated chiefly with activating this receptor.
Peyote: A small spineless cactus native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, containing mescaline. Peyote is the best-known natural source of mescaline.
Huichol: An Indigenous people of western Mexico whose religious traditions include a sacred relationship with peyote. Huichol ceremonial practice provides a living context for peyote’s mescaline-containing form.
Psychedelic therapy: The supervised use of psychedelic substances as part of psychological treatment or research. Mescaline’s possible therapeutic uses are considered within this developing field.
LSD: A potent synthetic psychedelic lysergamide that alters perception, thought, and mood. LSD produces overlapping effects but differs greatly in potency and chemical structure.
Serotonin receptor: A family of receptors that respond to serotonin and influence processes including mood, perception, and cognition. Mescaline acts within this broader receptor family.
San Pedro cactus: A columnar cactus native to the Andes that contains mescaline. This cactus is another traditional and botanical source of mescaline.
Comanche: An Indigenous people of the Southern Plains with a prominent role in the development of Native American Church peyotism. Comanche religious leadership helped shape modern Native American peyote traditions.
Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder: A condition involving recurrent or persistent perceptual disturbances after hallucinogen use. It describes a possible, uncommon lasting complication relevant to psychedelic exposure.
Psilocybin: A naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug found in certain mushrooms and converted in the body to psilocin. It is a natural psychedelic comparator with a different chemical family and time course.
