Mesoarchean

The middle era of the Archean Eon, spanning approximately 3.2 to 2.8 billion years ago. It includes major changes in continental crust, oceans, and early life.

Archean: The eon from about 4.0 to 2.5 billion years ago, when Earth’s earliest stable crust and life developed. The Mesoarchean is one of the Archean’s four eras.
Craton: An old, stable part of a continent’s lithosphere that has resisted major deformation for billions of years. Many cratons preserve rocks and structures formed during the Mesoarchean.
Barberton Greenstone Belt: An Archean rock belt in South Africa and Eswatini containing some of Earth’s oldest well-preserved volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Its rocks preserve geological and possible biological evidence from around 3.5 to 3.2 billion years ago.
Archean tectonics: The study of how Earth’s crust and mantle deformed and moved during the Archean Eon. Mesoarchean rocks constrain when and how plate-like tectonic behavior emerged.
Paleoarchean: The early era of the Archean Eon, spanning approximately 3.6 to 3.2 billion years ago. It immediately precedes the Mesoarchean in the geologic time scale.
Greenstone belt: A sequence of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks commonly preserved in Archean cratons. These belts record volcanism, sedimentation, and deformation within Mesoarchean terrains.
Pilbara Craton: An ancient continental block in Western Australia with a well-preserved Archean geological record. Its Mesoarchean rocks help document crustal development and early surface environments.
Archean atmosphere: Earth’s atmosphere during the Archean Eon, before atmospheric oxygen became abundant. Rock chemistry offers indirect clues to atmospheric composition during this era.
Neoarchean: The final era of the Archean Eon, spanning approximately 2.8 to 2.5 billion years ago. It follows the Mesoarchean and records later Archean developments.
Komatiite: A magnesium-rich volcanic rock formed from unusually hot, low-viscosity mantle-derived lava. Komatiites provide evidence of high mantle temperatures during parts of the Archean.
