Mesopotamian Marshes

A wetland complex in southern Iraq formed by the Tigris, Euphrates, and their tributaries. Its reed beds, shallow lakes, and seasonal floodplains support distinctive human and ecological communities.

Tigris: A major river of western Asia that flows through Turkey and Iraq before joining the Euphrates. Its branches and seasonal floods supply water to the northern and central marshes.
Hawizeh Marshes: A large wetland in southeastern Iraq extending across the border into Iran. It is a major surviving part of the wider marsh complex and a protected site.
Alluvial plain: A broad, flat landform created by sediment deposited by rivers and streams. River-borne sediment built the low-lying plain in which the marshes formed.
Ma’dan culture: The cultural traditions of the Marsh Arabs, shaped by life in southern Iraq’s wetlands. Reed architecture, water buffalo herding, and fishing express adaptation to marsh life.
Euphrates: A major river of western Asia flowing through Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Its lower course feeds marshes near the confluence with the Tigris.
Hammar Marshes: A wetland area south of the Euphrates in southern Iraq. It is one of the principal marsh regions alongside the central and Hawizeh marshes.
Holocene: The geological epoch that began about 11,700 years ago and continues today. The marsh landscape developed amid Holocene changes in river courses and sea level.
Sumerian mythology: The religious stories and divine traditions of ancient Sumer in southern Mesopotamia. The marshland setting formed part of the wider world in which Sumerian traditions developed.
Shatt al-Arab: A river in southern Iraq formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates. The marshes lie near the rivers’ confluence and the Shatt al-Arab’s headwaters.
Central Marshes: A wetland region between the Tigris and Euphrates in southern Iraq. It forms a core part of the marsh complex and was extensively drained.
