Mesoproterozoic

The middle era of the Proterozoic Eon, spanning approximately 1.6 billion to 1 billion years ago. It includes major changes in eukaryotic life and the assembly of the supercontinent Rodinia.

Calymmian: The first period of the Mesoproterozoic, spanning roughly 1.6 to 1.4 billion years ago. It marks the era’s opening interval, when continental margins accumulated extensive sedimentary deposits.
Rodinia: A supercontinent assembled during the Mesoproterozoic and later fragmented. Its assembly reshaped continental geography during the Stenian.
Proterozoic: The eon of Earth history from about 2.5 billion to 538.8 million years ago. The Mesoproterozoic is its middle era.
Stromatolite: A layered sedimentary structure commonly formed by microbial communities trapping or precipitating minerals. Mesoproterozoic stromatolites preserve evidence of microbial ecosystems across shallow seas.
Ectasian: The second period of the Mesoproterozoic, spanning roughly 1.4 to 1.2 billion years ago. Its rocks preserve evidence of widespread shallow seas and evolving eukaryotic ecosystems.
Grenville orogeny: A prolonged mountain-building event associated with the assembly of Rodinia. Its colliding continents record the tectonic processes that built the era’s supercontinent.
Paleoproterozoic: The earliest era of the Proterozoic Eon, spanning about 2.5 to 1.6 billion years ago. It immediately precedes the Mesoproterozoic and includes the Great Oxidation Event.
Bangiomorpha pubescens: A roughly 1.05-billion-year-old fossil alga from the Canadian Arctic, often interpreted as a red alga. It provides a notable fossil constraint on the antiquity of complex eukaryotic life.
Stenian: The final period of the Mesoproterozoic, spanning roughly 1.2 to 1 billion years ago. It includes Rodinia’s assembly and the era’s closing transition.
Mackenzie large igneous province: A vast Mesoproterozoic magmatic province in northwestern Canada, emplaced about 1.27 billion years ago. Its volcanic and intrusive rocks reveal major mantle-driven activity during the Ectasian.
