Mesoscopic physics

Mesoscopic physics studies systems between microscopic and macroscopic scales, where quantum coherence, fluctuations, and finite size shape observable behavior.

Quantum coherence: Quantum coherence is the preservation of phase relationships between components of a quantum state. Coherent phase relationships let a particle’s wave behavior span an entire mesoscopic device.
Electron mean free path: The electron mean free path is the average distance an electron travels between scattering events. Comparing it with device dimensions distinguishes ballistic from diffusive transport.
Quantum dot: A quantum dot is a nanoscale structure that confines electrons in all three spatial dimensions. Its discrete energy levels and controllable electron count make it a mesoscopic system.
Solid-state physics: Solid-state physics studies the physical properties of solids, especially their electronic and structural behavior. Mesoscopic physics examines finite devices whose properties depart from bulk-solid averages.
Quantum transport: Quantum transport describes the movement of particles through systems governed by quantum mechanics. It captures how electrons cross mesoscopic conductors while retaining quantum behavior.
Phase coherence length: The phase coherence length is the distance over which a particle’s quantum phase remains correlated. Mesoscopic effects require coherent motion across a substantial part of the sample.
Single-electron transistor: A single-electron transistor controls current by adding individual electrons to a small conducting island. Coulomb blockade lets mesoscopic charge quantization govern device operation.
Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology concerns the design and use of structures and devices at nanometer scales. Its size range overlaps mesoscopic physics, but its scope includes systems without prominent quantum coherence.
Landauer formula: The Landauer formula relates electrical conductance to transmission probabilities through a conductor’s available channels. It connects measured conductance to quantum transmission across a finite sample.
Fermi wavelength: The Fermi wavelength is the characteristic wavelength associated with electrons at a material’s Fermi energy. Confinement becomes consequential when device dimensions approach this wavelength.
