Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer arising from mesothelial cells, which line body cavities and cover organs. It most often affects the pleura around the lungs.

Asbestos: A group of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals once widely used for insulation and fire resistance. Inhaled asbestos fibers can lodge in pleural tissue and drive chronic injury associated with mesothelioma.
Biopsy: A procedure that removes tissue or cells for microscopic examination. Tissue sampling is generally needed to confirm mesothelioma and distinguish it from other cancers.

Immunohistochemistry: A laboratory method that uses antibodies to detect specific proteins in tissue samples. Marker panels help pathologists classify suspected mesothelioma and exclude mimicking tumors.
Irving Selikoff: An American physician and epidemiologist known for studying asbestos-related disease among insulation workers. His cohort studies documented severe disease burdens in workers exposed to asbestos.
Adenocarcinoma: A cancer arising from gland-forming epithelial cells or cells with glandular features. Pleural adenocarcinoma can mimic mesothelioma in tissue samples and requires diagnostic distinction.
Asbestos abatement: The controlled removal, containment, or management of asbestos-containing materials. Preventing fiber release during building work reduces exposure that could cause future disease.
