Knowra Mesotherm Mesotherm A mesotherm maintains a body temperature above its surroundings but below the consistently high temperatures typical of endotherms. Its temperature regulation combines features associated with both ectothermy and endothermy.
Endothermy : A mode of thermoregulation in which metabolic heat production maintains body temperature above environmental temperature. Mesotherms generate internal heat, but generally do not sustain endotherms’ high body temperatures.
Leatherback sea turtle : A large marine turtle capable of maintaining body temperatures above surrounding seawater. Its size, activity, and heat retention help it stay warm in cold water.
Body temperature : The temperature of an organism’s tissues, often measured at a specified body site. Mesothermy describes a body-temperature pattern relative to surroundings and endotherms.
Oxygen isotope paleothermometry : Methods that use oxygen isotope ratios in fossils to estimate ancient body or environmental temperatures. Isotope measurements offer independent evidence about dinosaur body temperatures.
Ectothermy : A mode of thermoregulation in which environmental heat supplies most body warmth. Mesotherms rely more on internal heat than ectotherms, though their temperatures can remain environmentally influenced.
Tuna : A group of fast-swimming predatory fish, some of which retain metabolic heat in parts of the body. Some tunas show regional endothermy, illustrating why mesothermy does not describe every warm-bodied animal uniformly.
Ambient temperature : The temperature of an organism’s surrounding environment. Comparing body and ambient temperatures reveals whether an animal stays warmer than its environment.
Bone histology : The microscopic study of bone structure, growth, and remodeling. Bone growth records can constrain metabolic interpretations but do not uniquely establish mesothermy.
Metabolic rate : The rate at which an organism uses energy through metabolism. Metabolic heat production can raise mesotherms’ body temperatures above ambient levels.
Great white shark : A large predatory shark that retains metabolic heat in several body regions. Its regional warming is often discussed alongside mesothermy, though classifications vary.
