Messianism

Messianism is belief in, or movements centered on, an anointed figure expected to bring deliverance or transformation. Its forms differ across religious traditions and historical settings.

Messiah: An anointed figure expected to fulfill a divinely appointed role, often associated with deliverance or renewal. The expected figure at the center of messianic belief.
Jewish messianism: Jewish beliefs and movements concerning a messianic age or an expected anointed deliverer. It is a major historical tradition of messianic expectation.
Prophecy: A message presented as divinely inspired revelation about the present or future. Prophecies can identify a coming deliverer or announce the conditions of their arrival.
Rebellion: Organized resistance against an established government or authority. Some movements have treated a messianic promise as grounds for armed resistance.
Anointing: A ritual act of applying oil to mark someone as consecrated or appointed for a role. The title messiah derives from the idea of anointing.
Christianity: A religion centered on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Christianity identifies Jesus as the Messiah and anticipates his return.
Charismatic authority: Authority grounded in followers' belief in a leader's exceptional, often sacred, qualities. A claimant's perceived charisma can turn messianic expectations into personal allegiance.
Religious persecution: The systematic mistreatment of people because of their religious beliefs or practices. Authorities have sometimes suppressed movements seen as threats to religious or political order.
Eschatology: Religious teachings about the ultimate destiny of humanity, history, or the world. Messianic expectations often place deliverance within a vision of history's end or renewal.
Mahdism: Beliefs concerning the Mahdi, a guided figure expected to restore justice in Islamic tradition. Mahdist expectations provide a distinct Islamic form of messianic hope.
