Mestizaje

Mestizaje is the historical mixing of Indigenous American, European, and African peoples and cultures, especially in Latin America. It also names ideologies that portray such mixing as central to national identity.

Spanish colonization of the Americas: The conquest and settlement of American territories by Spain from the late fifteenth century onward. Spanish conquest established colonial institutions that classified and governed populations through ancestry.
Mestizo: A person identified as having mixed Indigenous American and European ancestry, with meanings varying by place and era. The category names one identity historically associated with mestizaje.
Mexican nationalism: Political and cultural ideas that define Mexico as a nation with a shared history and identity. Mestizaje became a central account of Mexican national identity after the Revolution.
