Knowra Meta-communication Meta-communication Meta-communication is communication about communication: signals that frame how a message should be interpreted, including cues about context, relationship, and intent.
Metalinguistic communication : Communication that uses language to describe, clarify, or regulate language itself. It frames utterances by explicitly commenting on their wording or interpretation.
Pragmatics : The study of how context shapes the interpretation of language. It explains how conversational circumstances contribute to intended meaning.
Gregory Bateson : An English anthropologist and systems thinker whose work connected communication, learning, and ecology. Bateson developed influential accounts of messages that define how other messages should be understood.
Family therapy : Psychotherapy that addresses patterns of interaction among family members. Therapists examine how family members frame, contradict, or regulate one another’s messages.
Communication : The exchange or transmission of information, ideas, or signals between entities. Meta-communication is a special layer within communication, not a separate channel by definition.
Nonverbal communication : The transmission of information through bodily behavior, vocal qualities, and other signals outside words. Tone, gesture, and expression often signal how spoken words are meant.
Context (linguistics) : The linguistic and situational surroundings that help determine how an expression is understood. Meta-communicative cues often point to the context needed to interpret a message.
Don D. Jackson : An American psychiatrist and communication theorist associated with the Palo Alto group and family systems theory. Jackson helped develop the idea that relationships are communicated alongside content.
Interpersonal conflict : A disagreement or struggle between people whose goals, values, or needs clash. Disputes often concern not only what was said but how the exchange defines the relationship.
Content (communication) : The informational subject matter conveyed by a communicative act. Content is what a message says; meta-communication helps indicate how to take it.
