Metabolic rate

Metabolic rate is the rate at which an organism expends energy through biochemical processes. It varies with body size, activity, temperature, and physiological state.

Basal metabolic rate: The energy expenditure of an awake, resting organism under standardized conditions, measured after fasting and in a thermoneutral environment. It isolates baseline energy use from digestion, exercise, and temperature regulation.
Energy expenditure: The amount of energy an organism uses over a specified period. Metabolic rate is energy expenditure expressed per unit time.
Indirect calorimetry in clinical practice: The clinical measurement of energy expenditure from respiratory gas exchange. Clinicians use it to estimate nutrition needs in critically ill patients.
Maximum metabolic rate: The highest rate of energy expenditure an organism can sustain during intense activity. It contrasts with resting measures by capturing near-limit energy output.
Indirect calorimetry: A method for estimating energy expenditure from oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. It measures metabolic rate without directly collecting heat.
Resting metabolic rate: Energy expenditure measured at rest under less restrictive conditions than those required for basal metabolic rate. It is a practical estimate of baseline metabolism in humans.
Bioenergetics: The study of energy flow and transformation in living systems. Metabolic rate provides a measurable link between physiology and energy use.
Standard metabolic rate: The resting energy expenditure of an ectotherm measured under standardized conditions, including a specified temperature. It is the ectotherm counterpart to basal metabolic rate, with temperature explicitly controlled.
