Metabolism (architecture)

Metabolism was a postwar Japanese architectural movement that imagined cities and buildings as evolving systems, with replaceable parts and room for future growth.

Nakagin Capsule Tower: A Tokyo apartment building completed in 1972, designed with detachable residential capsules attached to two concrete cores. Kisho Kurokawa’s best-known built attempt to make a building’s living units replaceable.
Megastructure: A large, permanent structural framework designed to contain smaller, changeable buildings or units. Metabolist proposals often paired a durable urban frame with replaceable components.
Kenzo Tange: A Japanese architect whose work and teaching shaped postwar architecture in Japan and internationally. His projects and mentorship helped create the setting in which Metabolism emerged.
Kiyonori Kikutake: A Japanese architect and founding member of the Metabolist group. His Marine City and Sky House proposals explored growth and change at different scales.

World Design Conference 1960: An international design conference held in Tokyo in 1960. The conference was the public launch point for the Metabolist group and its manifesto.
Kisho Kurokawa: A Japanese architect and founding member of the Metabolist group. He developed capsule architecture and designed the Nakagin Capsule Tower.
Postmodern architecture: An architectural movement that challenged modernism through historical reference, pluralism, and varied forms. Its pluralist approach differed from Metabolism’s confidence in large-scale frameworks and technological growth.
