Metacarpophalangeal joint

A metacarpophalangeal joint connects a metacarpal bone to the proximal phalanx of a finger. It permits finger flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.

Metacarpal bone: One of five long bones in the palm, each connecting a carpal bone to a finger’s proximal phalanx. Its rounded head forms the metacarpal side of the joint.
Hand: The terminal part of the upper limb, composed of the wrist, palm, and fingers. The metacarpophalangeal joints connect the palm’s bones to the fingers.
Power grip: A grasp in which the hand closes around an object with the fingers and palm to generate force. Flexion at the joints helps the fingers wrap securely around an object.
Proximal interphalangeal joint: A finger joint between the proximal and middle phalanges. Unlike the metacarpophalangeal joint, it mainly bends and straightens.

Proximal phalanx: The first bone in a finger, articulating proximally with a metacarpal and distally with a middle phalanx or distal phalanx. Its base meets the head of the metacarpal at this joint.
Finger: A digit of the hand, built from phalanges and joints. Each finger’s proximal phalanx begins at a metacarpophalangeal joint.
Precision grip: A grasp that places an object between the thumb and one or more fingertips for controlled manipulation. Their mobility helps position fingers for controlled handling.
Distal interphalangeal joint: A finger joint between the middle and distal phalanges. It lies farther toward the fingertip and has more limited movement.
Boutonnière deformity: A finger deformity marked by proximal interphalangeal flexion and distal interphalangeal hyperextension. Its defining posture differs from deformities centered on metacarpophalangeal flexion.
