Knowra Metamizole Metamizole Metamizole, also called dipyrone, is a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Its use is restricted or withdrawn in some countries because of rare serious blood disorders.
Metamizole metabolites : Compounds formed when the body processes metamizole, including pharmacologically active products. Metamizole is rapidly converted into active metabolites that account for much of its effect.
Acute pain : Pain that begins suddenly and usually lasts a limited time, often following injury, surgery, or illness. Metamizole is used for moderate-to-severe acute pain in countries where it is available.
Agranulocytosis : A severe deficiency of granulocytes, a type of white blood cell, that increases infection risk. This rare but potentially fatal blood disorder is the adverse effect most associated with metamizole.
Paracetamol : A non-opioid medicine used to relieve pain and reduce fever, also called acetaminophen. It is a widely available alternative for pain and fever, with a different adverse-effect profile.
Prostaglandin : A group of lipid mediators involved in pain, inflammation, fever, and other physiological processes. Metamizole may reduce prostaglandin production, though its effects do not fit a single established pathway.
Postoperative pain : Pain experienced after a surgical procedure. Metamizole can be prescribed alone or alongside other medicines for pain after surgery.
Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia : A drug-triggered immune reaction that destroys platelets and can cause dangerously low platelet counts. It is another rare blood complication reported with metamizole, distinct from agranulocytosis.
Ibuprofen : A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation. Unlike metamizole, ibuprofen has established anti-inflammatory activity and characteristic gastrointestinal and kidney risks.
Cyclooxygenase : An enzyme family that produces prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. Cyclooxygenase inhibition is one proposed contributor to metamizole’s analgesic and antipyretic effects.
Renal colic : Severe, often wave-like pain caused by urinary obstruction, commonly from a kidney stone. Metamizole is used in some settings to relieve the intense pain of renal colic.
