Metamorphic petrology

Metamorphic petrology studies rocks transformed by heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids without complete melting, interpreting their minerals and textures to reconstruct geological conditions.

Metamorphic facies: A set of mineral assemblages characteristic of a particular range of pressure and temperature. Facies classify the conditions recorded by metamorphic mineral assemblages.
Mineral: A naturally occurring solid with an ordered atomic structure and a defined chemical composition or range. Metamorphic rocks are interpreted through the minerals they contain.
Pressure-temperature-time path: A reconstruction of how a rock's pressure and temperature changed through geological time. These paths turn mineral evidence into a history of burial, heating, and exhumation.
Barrovian metamorphism: Regional metamorphism in which characteristic mineral zones develop with increasing metamorphic grade. Its index-mineral sequence illustrates how grade can be mapped across terrain.
Metamorphic grade: A qualitative measure of the intensity of metamorphism, commonly associated with increasing temperature. Grade summarizes the progressive thermal changes tracked by mineral reactions.
Mineral assemblage: A group of minerals occurring together in a rock. Coexisting minerals constrain the conditions under which the rock equilibrated.
Geothermobarometry: Methods for estimating the pressure and temperature at which minerals formed or equilibrated. Mineral chemistry can quantify the conditions inferred from metamorphic assemblages.
Blueschist: A metamorphic rock formed under high pressure and relatively low temperature, commonly in subduction zones. Its minerals record the unusual conditions of cold, descending oceanic crust.
Metamorphic reactions: Mineral transformations driven by changes in temperature, pressure, or chemical composition. Reactions explain how new mineral assemblages form as rock conditions change.
Chemical component: A chemically defined constituent used to describe the composition of a system. Component choices simplify the chemistry of complex rocks and mineral reactions.
