Metatheatre

Metatheatre is drama that draws attention to its own theatrical construction, including acting, staging, or the audience’s presence. It makes the boundary between a play and its performance visible.

Play within a play: A dramatic scene or performance embedded inside a larger play. The inner performance makes theatrical artifice visible within the outer drama.
The Mousetrap (Hamlet): The play staged at court in Shakespeare’s Hamlet to test Claudius’s response to a murder. Its performance mirrors the suspected crime and makes theatrical imitation a plot device.
Lionel Abel: An American critic who introduced the term “metatheatre” in a 1963 book of that title. Abel gave the concept its influential name and treated self-conscious drama as a distinct form.
Naturalism (theatre): A theatrical style that seeks a detailed, plausible representation of everyday life. Its commitment to an apparently self-contained world contrasts with metatheatre’s exposed construction.
Fourth wall: The imagined boundary between performers and the audience in a staged drama. Metatheatre can break or expose this boundary by acknowledging spectators.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: William Shakespeare’s comedy about lovers, fairies, and an amateur troupe preparing a play. The mechanicals’ performance of Pyramus and Thisbe exposes the gap between acting and lived experience.
Metamorphoses (Ovid): Ovid’s Latin poem of mythological transformations, including stories that later supplied theatrical self-reflection. Its myths, such as Pyramus and Thisbe, became material for plays that stage their own making.
Realism (theatre): A theatrical movement that represents recognizable social life through plausible characters and situations. Realist conventions often sustain dramatic illusion, while metatheatre calls attention to that illusion.
Direct address: Speech directed explicitly to an audience, rather than only to other characters. Addressing spectators makes the audience’s presence part of the theatrical event.
The Spanish Tragedy: Thomas Kyd’s revenge tragedy, in which a staged performance becomes part of the protagonists’ revenge. Its embedded play turns theatrical performance into an instrument of judgment and retaliation.
