Meteoric iron

Meteoric iron is naturally occurring metallic iron in meteorites, composed mainly of iron and nickel. It can be worked into tools and ornaments without smelting.

Iron–nickel alloy: A metallic material in which iron and nickel are the principal alloying elements. Meteoric iron is a naturally formed iron–nickel alloy.
Tutankhamun's iron dagger: An iron dagger from the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, whose blade contains meteoritic iron. Its composition is a celebrated example of meteoric iron used in an ancient weapon.
Planetary differentiation: The separation of a planetary body into layers of different composition, including metallic cores and rocky mantles. Iron meteorites often come from metallic cores of differentiated asteroids.
Hoba meteorite: A massive iron meteorite in Namibia, the largest known intact meteorite on Earth. It is a striking natural mass of meteoric iron.
Meteorite classification: The scientific grouping of meteorites by composition, structure, and inferred origin. Classification distinguishes iron meteorites from stony and stony-iron material.
Taenite: A nickel-rich iron–nickel alloy phase with a face-centered cubic crystal structure. This mineral phase is one constituent of many iron meteorites.
Cape York meteorite: A large iron meteorite found in Greenland and used by Inuit communities as a source of iron. Its mass supplied metal for tools and harpoon points.
Asteroid: A small rocky or metallic Solar System body that orbits the Sun. Many iron meteorites are fragments of asteroids disrupted by collisions.
Willamette Meteorite: A large iron meteorite discovered in Oregon and now displayed at the American Museum of Natural History. Its public history illustrates the cultural and legal significance of meteorite finds.
Iron meteorite groups: Chemical and structural categories of iron meteorites used to infer distinct parent asteroids. Group differences constrain how many metallic parent bodies contributed meteorites.
