Methyl methacrylate

Methyl methacrylate is an organic ester with a polymerizable carbon–carbon double bond. It is used chiefly to make poly(methyl methacrylate), a transparent acrylic plastic.

Free-radical polymerization: A chain-growth polymerization in which radicals add successive monomer molecules. This chain reaction joins methyl methacrylate molecules into acrylic polymers.
Acrylic glass: A transparent plastic sheet made primarily from poly(methyl methacrylate). Methyl methacrylate polymerization produces the material used as a glass substitute.
Molecular formula: A notation that gives the number of each type of atom in a molecule. Methyl methacrylate has formula C5H8O2, a compact check on its composition.
Occupational exposure limit: A regulatory or advisory concentration limit for a hazardous substance in workplace air. Workplace controls for methyl methacrylate exposure are compared with these limits.
Poly(methyl methacrylate): A transparent thermoplastic polymer made from methyl methacrylate monomers. It is the principal polymer formed by methyl methacrylate polymerization.
Bone cement: Acrylic polymer cement used to anchor orthopedic implants and fill bone defects. Methyl methacrylate monomer polymerizes in place in many bone cements.
Ester: An organic compound containing a carbonyl bonded to an oxygen that is bonded to another carbon group. Methyl methacrylate belongs to this functional-group family.
Chemical sensitization: An acquired immune response that causes allergic reactions after exposure to a chemical. Methyl methacrylate can cause skin sensitization in exposed workers.
Acrylic acid: An unsaturated carboxylic acid used to make polymers, esters, and other chemicals. It is an industrial precursor in routes that produce methyl methacrylate.
Dental restorative material: A material used to repair or replace damaged tooth structure. Methyl methacrylate chemistry underlies some acrylic dental resins and prostheses.
