Methylphenidate

Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant prescribed mainly for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. It increases signaling by dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Dopamine transporter: A membrane protein that clears dopamine from synapses by transporting it back into neurons. Methylphenidate blocks this transporter, slowing dopamine reuptake.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that impairs functioning. Methylphenidate is widely prescribed to reduce ADHD symptoms.
Amphetamine: A class of stimulant drugs that increases monoamine signaling through mechanisms including transporter reversal and release. Amphetamines treat ADHD too, but promote neurotransmitter release more directly than methylphenidate.
Methylphenidate adverse effects: Unwanted effects associated with methylphenidate, including reduced appetite, insomnia, and increased heart rate. These effects can influence dose selection and whether treatment continues.
Norepinephrine transporter: A membrane protein that removes norepinephrine from synapses by transporting it into neurons. Methylphenidate also blocks this transporter, raising extracellular norepinephrine.
Narcolepsy: A chronic neurological disorder that disrupts sleep-wake regulation and can cause excessive daytime sleepiness. Methylphenidate can promote wakefulness in some people with narcolepsy.
Atomoxetine: A nonstimulant ADHD medication that selectively inhibits the norepinephrine transporter. It treats ADHD without being a psychostimulant or directly targeting dopamine transporters.
Stimulant use disorder: A pattern of stimulant use causing clinically significant impairment or distress. Methylphenidate can be misused and may contribute to stimulant-related harm.
Catecholamine: A class of signaling molecules that includes dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. The drug’s main neurotransmitter targets belong to this chemical family.
Conners' Continuous Performance Test: A computerized assessment that measures attention and response control over repeated target-detection trials. Performance testing can help assess attention, though it does not diagnose ADHD by itself.
