Métis

The Métis are an Indigenous people with distinct communities, cultures, and history rooted in the historic Northwest fur trade. Their identity is distinct from First Nations and Inuit identities.

Northwest fur trade: A commerce network linking Indigenous peoples and European traders across the interior of North America. Its trading posts and kinship networks helped shape early Métis communities.
Louis Riel: A Métis political and spiritual leader who led resistance movements in 1869–70 and 1885. His leadership made him central to Métis struggles for self-government and land.
Métis identity: A collective identity grounded in distinct Métis communities, histories, and cultural practices. It distinguishes Métis peoplehood from ancestry alone or broad mixed-descent labels.
Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982: A constitutional provision recognizing and affirming existing Aboriginal and treaty rights in Canada. Its wording explicitly includes Métis rights among those protected.
First Nations: Indigenous peoples in Canada who are neither Inuit nor Métis, including many distinct nations and communities. Métis are a distinct Indigenous people, not a general label for First Nations people of mixed ancestry.
Red River Colony: A settlement established by the Hudson’s Bay Company at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. It became the central homeland of a large Métis community in the nineteenth century.
Gabriel Dumont: A Métis political and military leader who helped organize resistance in 1885. His military leadership reflected the political organization of prairie Métis communities.
Michif: A group of Métis languages combining elements of Cree, French, and other Indigenous and European languages. Michif expresses the distinctive linguistic histories of Métis communities.
R v Powley: A 2003 Supreme Court of Canada decision setting a test for Métis Aboriginal rights claims. It established criteria for identifying rights-bearing Métis communities and their members.
Inuit: An Indigenous people whose homeland spans Inuit Nunangat across the Arctic regions of Canada. Inuit identity and history are distinct from Métis origins in the fur-trade Northwest.
