Michael I Cerularius

Michael I Cerularius was patriarch of Constantinople from 1043 to 1059. His confrontation with papal representatives in 1054 helped deepen the division between Eastern and Western Christianity.

East–West Schism: The gradual division of Christianity into Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions, conventionally associated with the events of 1054. Cerularius’s confrontation with papal legates became a defining episode in the schism’s conventional chronology.
