Michael Joseph Savage

Michael Joseph Savage was a New Zealand Labour Party leader and prime minister from 1935 to 1940. His government built the foundations of New Zealand’s welfare state.

Social Security Act 1938: A New Zealand law that established a comprehensive system of social security, including pensions and health services. Savage’s government made this landmark law the centrepiece of its welfare reforms.
