Michael Thonet

Michael Thonet (1796–1871) was a German-Austrian cabinetmaker and furniture designer who developed commercial bentwood furniture production and founded the Thonet company.

Bentwood: Wood shaped into curves by steaming or otherwise softening it before bending and drying. Thonet made bentwood into a repeatable furniture-making method.
Bentwood furniture: Furniture whose shaped wooden parts are formed by bending rather than carved from solid blocks. This was the product category Thonet made central to his manufacturing system.
Boppard: A town on the Rhine in Germany, where Michael Thonet began his cabinetmaking work. Thonet’s early experiments with bentwood furniture took shape in Boppard.
Café culture: The social and commercial tradition of meeting, eating, and spending time in cafés. Light, robust Thonet chairs suited the repeated use and flexible layouts of cafés.
