Michiel de Ruyter

Michiel de Ruyter (1607–1676) was a Dutch admiral who commanded the Dutch fleet in major seventeenth-century conflicts, including the Anglo-Dutch Wars.

Raid on the Medway: A Dutch naval raid on English ships and dockyards in June 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. De Ruyter’s fleet penetrated the English naval base at Chatham in the war’s most celebrated Dutch victory.
Line of battle: A naval formation in which warships sail in a line to bring their guns to bear while limiting exposure. De Ruyter used disciplined fleet formations in battles where coordinated broadsides mattered.
