Michio Miyagi

Michio Miyagi (1894–1956) was a Japanese composer and koto player who expanded the instrument’s range and technique, developed the 17-string koto, and composed “Haru no Umi.”

Koto: A Japanese plucked zither with movable bridges and strings traditionally played with finger plectra. Miyagi’s compositions and instrument designs grew from this established Japanese zither.
Haru no Umi: A 1929 instrumental duet by Michio Miyagi for koto and shakuhachi, often translated as “The Sea in Spring.” This celebrated duet is Miyagi’s signature work and a familiar seasonal piece in Japan.
