MicroLED

MicroLED is a display technology in which microscopic inorganic light-emitting diodes form individually controlled pixels. Each pixel emits its own light, so the display needs no backlight.

Light-emitting diode: A semiconductor device that emits light when electric current passes through it. Each MicroLED pixel is built from tiny light-emitting diodes.
Gallium nitride: A semiconductor compound used in blue and green light-emitting diodes and other electronic devices. Many MicroLED emitters, especially blue ones, use gallium nitride.
OLED: A display technology in which organic electroluminescent materials emit light when electrically driven. OLED is the closest self-emissive display rival, but uses organic rather than inorganic emitters.
MicroLED television: A television whose image is formed by individually controlled microscopic inorganic LED pixels. Large-screen televisions are a prominent application for modular MicroLED panels.
MicroLED color uniformity: The consistency of color and brightness among emitters across a MicroLED display. Emitter variation can produce visible nonuniformity and increase calibration demands.
Active-matrix display: A display architecture in which each pixel is controlled by its own switching elements. Active-matrix circuitry addresses and regulates individual MicroLED pixels.
Indium gallium nitride: A semiconductor alloy whose composition can be tuned to emit different colors of visible light. Its composition underlies many blue and green MicroLED emitters.
LCD: A display technology that modulates a backlight with liquid-crystal cells and optical filters. LCD pixels do not emit light, unlike MicroLED pixels.
MicroLED video wall: A large display assembled from multiple MicroLED cabinets or panels. Modular construction lets MicroLED systems scale to very large image surfaces.
MicroLED repair: The detection and replacement or correction of defective emitters in a MicroLED display. A few failed pixels can require complex inspection and repair at microscopic scale.
