Microspore

A haploid spore produced by meiosis in a seed plant that develops into the male gametophyte, usually a pollen grain.

Microsporogenesis: The process by which diploid microsporocytes undergo meiosis to produce haploid microspores. It produces microspores from diploid precursor cells inside the anther.
Haploid: Having one complete set of chromosomes. A microspore carries one chromosome set after meiosis.
Megaspore: A haploid spore that develops into the female gametophyte of a seed plant. It is the female counterpart of the male-gametophyte-forming microspore.
Anther culture: A tissue-culture technique that grows plants from cells within anthers. It can induce microspores to develop into haploid plants.
Microgametogenesis: The development of a microspore into a mature male gametophyte. It describes the microspore’s transformation into the male gametophyte.
Gametophyte: The haploid, gamete-producing generation in a plant life cycle. The microspore develops into the male member of this generation.
Microsporangium: A pollen sac in which microspores are produced. It is the structure that contains developing microspores, not the spores themselves.
Microspore culture: A tissue-culture method that isolates microspores and induces them to form embryos or plants. It uses microspores directly for experimental plant regeneration.
Microsporocyte: A diploid cell that undergoes meiosis to produce microspores. This precursor divides to form the microspore tetrad.
Sporophyte: The diploid, spore-producing generation in a plant life cycle. The sporophyte produces microspores, while the microspore belongs to the haploid generation.
