Microstate

A microstate is a sovereign state with exceptionally small territory or population. Despite its size, it exercises independent political authority and is recognized as a state.

Monaco: A sovereign city-state on the French Riviera, known for its small territory and constitutional monarchy. Its dense urban territory and independent status make it a prominent European microstate.
Sovereignty: The authority of a state to govern itself and conduct relations with other states. Microstates qualify as states through sovereign authority, not through a minimum size.
Economies of scale: Cost advantages that arise when production or services operate at larger scale. Small domestic markets can make infrastructure and public services unusually expensive per person.
Micronation: A self-proclaimed political entity that lacks broad international recognition as a sovereign state. Tiny territory alone does not make a micronation a recognized microstate.
United Nations member state: A sovereign state admitted to membership in the United Nations. UN membership offers a practical threshold, but it excludes some entities with contested status.
Nauru: An island republic in the Pacific Ocean and one of the world's smallest sovereign states. Its tiny land area and remote location exemplify a Pacific microstate.
Diplomatic recognition: Acceptance by states that another political entity has the status of a state or government. Recognition helps microstates participate in international relations despite limited material power.
Tourism: Travel for leisure, business, or other purposes and the industries that serve it. Tourism can generate income for microstates, while concentrating economic dependence in one sector.
City-state: A sovereign state consisting of a city and its surrounding territory. Some microstates are city-states, but the terms describe different features: size and political form.
State recognition: The act by which states acknowledge an entity as a sovereign state. Disputes over recognition complicate attempts to define microstates by a single objective rule.
