Microwave

Microwaves are electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than infrared and shorter than radio waves. Their frequencies span roughly 300 MHz to 300 GHz, though boundary conventions vary.

Electromagnetic spectrum: The full range of electromagnetic radiation, ordered by frequency or wavelength. Microwaves occupy the band between infrared and radio waves.
Microwave oven: An appliance that heats food by exposing it to microwave radiation, usually near 2.45 GHz. It turns microwave absorption into a familiar form of rapid food heating.
Wavelength: The distance between successive points of equal phase in a wave. Microwave wavelengths range from about a meter to a millimeter under common band conventions.
Infrared: Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light and shorter than microwaves. Infrared lies immediately below microwaves in wavelength and often interacts through molecular vibrations.
Dielectric heating: Heating caused when an alternating electric field drives energy loss in polar or electrically responsive materials. Microwave ovens heat food mainly through dielectric losses in its water and other molecules.
Radar: A system that detects objects by transmitting radio waves and analyzing their reflected signals. Many radar systems use microwave frequencies for directional beams and useful target resolution.
Frequency: The number of cycles of a periodic signal or wave per unit time. Microwave frequency determines wavelength, antenna scale, and many material interactions.
Radio wave: Electromagnetic radiation at frequencies below infrared, including a broad range of communication and broadcast bands. Microwaves are commonly treated as the high-frequency portion of the radio spectrum.
Microwave cavity: A conducting enclosure that confines electromagnetic fields and supports resonant modes. Microwave ovens and laboratory instruments use cavities to shape and confine microwave fields.
Wi-Fi: A family of wireless networking standards that connect devices through radio-frequency signals. Common Wi-Fi bands at 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz lie within the microwave range.
