Mid-Autumn Festival

A festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month in several East and Southeast Asian cultures. It centers on the full moon, harvest traditions, family gatherings, and foods such as mooncakes.

Mooncake: A round or shaped pastry traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Its shared fillings and circular form connect festive eating with reunion and the full moon.
Chinese lunisolar calendar: A calendar that coordinates lunar months with the solar year through intercalary months. It fixes the festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month.
Chuseok: A Korean harvest holiday observed on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. It shares the date and reunion emphasis while retaining distinct Korean rites and foods.
Lunar month: The interval between successive new moons, averaging about 29.5 days. The festival date is counted within a lunar month rather than a Gregorian month.
Chang'e: A Chinese lunar goddess associated with the legend of ascending to the Moon. Her lunar story is among the festival’s best-known legends.
Zhongqiu Festival: The Chinese name for the Mid-Autumn Festival, literally the Mid-Autumn Festival. The name reflects the festival’s place in the middle of autumn.
Tsukimi: A Japanese custom of appreciating the autumn Moon, traditionally with seasonal offerings. It resembles festival moon viewing but is not the same holiday.
Full moon: The lunar phase when the Moon’s Earth-facing hemisphere appears fully illuminated. The festival falls on the eighth month’s fifteenth day, traditionally a full-moon night.
Jade Rabbit: A rabbit in East Asian lunar folklore, often depicted living on the Moon. The Moon’s rabbit gives moon viewing a familiar mythic companion.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907. Moon-viewing customs gained prominence in Tang-era elite culture.
