Midbrain

The uppermost part of the brainstem, between the forebrain and hindbrain. Its structures contribute to movement, visual and auditory processing, and alertness.

Brainstem: The brain region connecting the cerebrum with the spinal cord, comprising the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. The midbrain is the brainstem’s uppermost division.
Superior colliculus: A midbrain structure that integrates sensory information and helps direct eye and head movements toward stimuli. It converts visual and other sensory signals into orienting movements.
Parkinson's disease: A progressive neurological disorder marked by movement symptoms associated with loss of dopamine-producing neurons. Degeneration of substantia nigra dopamine neurons contributes to its motor symptoms.
Pons: The middle division of the brainstem, situated between the midbrain and medulla oblongata. Unlike the midbrain, the pons lies below it and relays signals between the cerebrum and cerebellum.
Tectum: The dorsal part of the midbrain, containing the superior and inferior colliculi. Its paired colliculi organize key visual and auditory responses.
Inferior colliculus: A midbrain auditory structure that processes sound information and relays it toward the thalamus. It is a major waypoint for auditory signals ascending through the midbrain.
Weber syndrome: A midbrain stroke syndrome combining weakness on one side of the body with impaired eye movement on the opposite side. It illustrates how nearby motor and oculomotor pathways can be affected together.
Medulla oblongata: The lowest part of the brainstem, governing essential functions such as breathing and cardiovascular control. Its vital autonomic centers contrast with the midbrain’s stronger sensory-orienting and movement roles.
Tegmentum: A central region of the midbrain containing nuclei, pathways, and networks involved in movement and arousal. It contains several of the midbrain’s major motor and alertness systems.
Substantia nigra: A midbrain structure whose dopamine-producing neurons help regulate movement and whose other neurons contribute to motor circuits. Its dopamine neurons influence movement through connections with the striatum.
