Midhat Pasha

Midhat Pasha (1822–1884) was an Ottoman statesman and reformer who helped draft the empire’s 1876 constitution and championed constitutional government.

Abdulhamid II: Abdulhamid II was Ottoman sultan from 1876 to 1909, ruling initially under a constitution he later suspended. He dismissed Midhat and suspended the constitution Midhat had helped establish.
Ottoman Constitution of 1876: The Ottoman Empire’s first constitution established a parliament and defined the powers of government. Midhat chaired the council that prepared this constitution and pressed for its adoption.
Danube Vilayet: The Danube Vilayet was an Ottoman province created in 1864, with its administrative center at Ruse. As governor, Midhat used the province to test administrative and social reforms.
Midhat Pasha trial: The 1881 Yıldız trial convicted Midhat Pasha and others of involvement in Sultan Abdulaziz’s death. The trial provided the legal pretext for removing Midhat from political life.
Abdulaziz: Abdulaziz was Ottoman sultan from 1861 until his deposition in 1876. Midhat took part in the political crisis that ended Abdulaziz’s reign.
First Constitutional Era: The Ottoman Empire’s First Constitutional Era began in 1876 and ended when Abdulhamid II suspended parliament in 1878. This short-lived period put Midhat’s constitutional program into practice.
Baghdad Vilayet: The Baghdad Vilayet was an Ottoman province encompassing much of present-day Iraq. Midhat governed Baghdad from 1869 to 1872 and pursued administrative improvements there.
Taif: Taif is a city in western Saudi Arabia that served as a place of exile under Ottoman rule. Midhat was imprisoned in Taif after his conviction and died there in 1884.
Murad V: Murad V was Ottoman sultan for three months in 1876, between Abdulaziz and Abdulhamid II. Midhat supported Murad’s accession during the upheaval that preceded constitutional government.
Young Ottomans: The Young Ottomans were a nineteenth-century group of Ottoman intellectuals who advocated reform and constitutional government. Their ideas helped create the political climate in which Midhat’s constitution was drafted.
