Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin

Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826–1889) was a Russian writer whose novels and stories used satire, grotesque imagery, and allegory to expose bureaucracy, social injustice, and autocratic rule.

Russian serfdom: A system that bound Russian peasants to landlords or state estates until its abolition in 1861. The social hierarchy he criticized rested on serfdom, which ended during his lifetime.
The History of a Town: Saltykov-Shchedrin’s satirical chronicle of the fictional Russian town of Glupov and its rulers. Its succession of absurd governors makes autocratic rule the subject of comic history.
