Miletus

Miletus was an ancient Greek city on the western coast of Anatolia, renowned for maritime trade, early philosophy, and founding colonies across the Black Sea.

Ionians: An ancient Greek people associated with the Aegean islands and the western coast of Anatolia. Miletus was one of the leading cities of the Ionian Greeks.
Thales of Miletus: An early Greek thinker traditionally regarded as the first philosopher and one of the Seven Sages. Ancient accounts identify him as a native of Miletus who sought natural principles behind the world.
Milesian colonies: Settlements founded by Miletus around the Black Sea and elsewhere in the Mediterranean. These colonies extended the city’s commercial and political influence far beyond Anatolia.
Ionia: The ancient region along the central western coast of Anatolia, settled by Greek-speaking communities. Miletus was one of Ionia’s principal cities.
Ionian League: An association of twelve Greek cities in Ionia, united by shared religious and political ties. Miletus was a leading member of the league and a center of Ionian cooperation.
Milesian Revolt: A revolt of Ionian Greek cities against Persian rule from 499 to 494 BCE. Miletus led the uprising whose defeat brought severe destruction to the city.
Anaximander: A Greek philosopher who proposed the apeiron, an indefinite source of all things. He was a Milesian thinker who extended the city’s tradition of cosmological inquiry.
Black Sea Greek colonies: Greek settlements established along the shores of the Black Sea from the seventh century BCE onward. Milesian foundations formed a large part of this wider colonial network.
Maeander River: A river in western Anatolia that flows into the Aegean Sea near ancient Miletus. Its sediment gradually altered the coastline and contributed to the silting of Miletus’s harbor.
Herodotus: A fifth-century BCE Greek historian whose work recounts the Greco-Persian Wars and earlier events. His account preserves much of the surviving narrative about Miletus and the Ionian Revolt.
