Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a fiord on New Zealand’s South Island, within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. Its steep-sided cliffs, waterfalls, and rainforest meet the Tasman Sea.

Fiord: A deep, narrow sea inlet formed when a glacier-carved valley is flooded by the sea. Milford Sound is a fiord whose defining shape comes from glacial erosion and later sea-level flooding.
Waterfall: A place where flowing water drops vertically or steeply over a rock face. Rainfall produces many temporary and persistent waterfalls on the fiord’s cliffs.
Milford Road: State Highway 94, the road connecting Te Anau with Milford Sound in New Zealand. This alpine route is the principal road access to the fiord.
Mitre Peak: A distinctive mountain rising 1,692 metres above Milford Sound in Fiordland, New Zealand. Its sharp profile dominates views from the fiord and is among its best-known landmarks.

Milford Sound Airport: A small airport near Milford Sound serving scenic flights and limited local transport. Air access offers an alternative to the long road journey through Fiordland.
Stirling Falls: A waterfall that drops from the cliffs into Milford Sound, New Zealand. The falls are a prominent feature on the northern side of the fiord.
Te Wahipounamu: A UNESCO World Heritage site covering four national parks in southwestern New Zealand. Milford Sound forms part of this internationally recognized natural heritage area.
