Military aviation

Military aviation is the use of aircraft by armed forces for combat, reconnaissance, transport, training, and other military purposes. It includes fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and uncrewed systems.

Air superiority: The degree of control one force has over the air that allows operations without prohibitive interference from enemy air forces. Fighters and supporting aircraft seek to secure the airspace needed for military operations.
Air combat maneuvering: The use of aircraft maneuvers to gain an advantageous position in an aerial engagement. It describes how fighter pilots seek firing opportunities while avoiding an opponent’s weapons.
Wright brothers: American aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, who made the first sustained, controlled powered airplane flight in 1903. Their early aircraft established the technology that armed forces soon adapted.
Naval aviation: The operation of aircraft by naval forces, including carrier-based and land-based maritime aviation. It is a specialized branch of military aviation shaped by operations at sea.
Air power: The ability to use aircraft and related systems to influence events through control or use of the air. Military aviation supplies the aircraft and operations through which air power is exercised.
Aerial reconnaissance: The collection of information about people, terrain, or activity from aircraft or airborne sensors. Aircraft can observe enemy positions and movements without engaging them.
Radar: A system that detects objects by transmitting radio waves and analyzing their reflections. Airborne radar helps crews detect, track, and identify targets beyond visual range.
World War I aviation: The development and military use of aircraft during the First World War, from reconnaissance to fighters and bombers. The war rapidly turned fragile aircraft into specialized military tools.
Army aviation: The use of aircraft by land forces, especially helicopters and other platforms supporting ground operations. Its missions and command relationships differ from those of independent air forces.
Independent air force: A military service organized separately from army and navy command structures to conduct air operations. The demands of aviation helped drive the creation of air services independent from other forces.
