Military band
A military band is an ensemble of wind and percussion instruments associated with armed forces, ceremonial duties, and outdoor performance.
Marching band: A wind and percussion ensemble that performs while marching, often at sporting events, parades, and civic ceremonies. Military bands share its mobile instrumentation, but military identity and duties distinguish them.
Wind instrument: A musical instrument that produces sound when air vibrates within it or across an opening. Wind instruments form the melodic and harmonic core of most military bands.
Ottoman military bands: Military ensembles of the Ottoman Empire, known for percussion-rich music and the mehter tradition. Their distinctive sound influenced European military music and the use of Turkish-style percussion.
Military funeral: A funeral conducted with honors for a person whose military service or status qualifies for them. Bands provide processional music and ceremonial honors at many military funerals.
Concert band: An ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion that performs seated on a stage or in a concert hall. It shares much of the instrumentation but usually performs without military duties or marching.
Brass band: An ensemble built primarily from brass instruments and percussion, with a tradition especially strong in Britain. Its brass-heavy sound overlaps with military bands, though its instrumentation and civilian traditions differ.
Percussion instrument: A musical instrument sounded by striking, shaking, scraping, or another physical action. Percussion supplies pulse, accents, and audible signals in military-band performance.
Janissary band: A musical ensemble associated with the elite infantry corps of the Ottoman Empire. Janissary music became a model for European composers and military-band instrumentation.
Military parade: A formal procession of military personnel and equipment, often held for ceremony or public display. Bands provide music and rhythmic structure for parades involving troops and colors.
Orchestra: A large instrumental ensemble centered on strings, with woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Its string-led sound and concert setting contrast with a military band’s wind-centered outdoor role.
