Military doctrine is authoritative guidance that shapes how armed forces prepare for, organize, and conduct operations. It expresses principles for action without prescribing a fixed response to every situation.

Operational art: The practice of designing and conducting campaigns to connect military actions with strategic objectives. Doctrine guides how commanders link tactical actions into campaigns.
Antoine-Henri Jomini: A Swiss military theorist whose writings systematized principles of strategy and warfare. His influential principles helped shape nineteenth-century military education and doctrine.
