Military intervention

Military intervention is the use of armed forces by an outside power to influence events in another state or conflict. It ranges from limited strikes and deployments to occupation.

Use of force in international relations: The use or threat of armed force by states in their relations with one another. Military intervention is one way states apply force beyond their borders.
Non-intervention: A policy of refraining from interference in another state's internal affairs. It is the direct policy alternative to using armed forces abroad.
Peace of Westphalia: The 1648 settlement that ended major European wars and became associated with state sovereignty. The sovereignty tradition often invoked to limit intervention is linked to this settlement.
Korean War: A 1950–1953 conflict between North and South Korea, involving UN forces led by the United States and Chinese forces. UN-authorized military action defended South Korea against invasion.
Sovereignty: The authority of a state to govern its territory and conduct its affairs independently. Intervention directly tests the limits of a state's control over its own affairs.
Coercive diplomacy: A strategy that uses threats or limited force to make an adversary change its behavior. Interventions often combine military pressure with demands and diplomatic negotiation.
Proxy war: A conflict in which outside powers support local parties rather than fight each other directly. Proxy warfare can influence another conflict without direct deployment of outside combat forces.
UN Charter: The 1945 treaty establishing the United Nations and setting rules for international peace and security. Its rules govern the modern prohibition on force and exceptions for collective action.
Vietnam War: A 1955–1975 conflict in which North Vietnam and its allies fought South Vietnam and its principal foreign supporters. U.S. intervention expanded into a prolonged war with contested aims and rising costs.
Civilian casualties: Deaths and injuries among people who are not members of armed forces. Military action can harm civilians even when protecting them is a stated aim.
