Military medicine

Military medicine is the practice and organization of healthcare for armed forces and military operations, including prevention, battlefield treatment, evacuation, and rehabilitation.

Tactical combat casualty care: A set of battlefield trauma-care guidelines adapted to tactical conditions and available resources. It organizes immediate care around threats, casualty treatment, and evacuation.
Combat casualty care: The treatment of injuries sustained during armed conflict, from point of injury through definitive care. It is the most visible operational application of military medicine.
Dominique Jean Larrey: A French military surgeon who developed rapid battlefield evacuation and mobile surgical units. Larrey’s ambulance volante system helped establish rapid evacuation as a military medical principle.
Civilian medicine: Healthcare organized primarily for civilian populations outside armed forces. Military care must operate within command structures and conditions unlike most civilian practice.

Disaster medicine: Medical planning and care for populations affected by disasters that overwhelm ordinary services. It shares austere triage challenges but does not center on combat or military objectives.
Medical evacuation: The organized transport of injured or ill people to medical facilities for care. Evacuation links battlefield treatment to progressively more capable medical facilities.
Military epidemiology: The study of disease patterns and health determinants in military populations. Surveillance helps identify outbreaks and hazards in deployed forces.
