Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853 after Zachary Taylor died. His administration backed the Compromise of 1850 and enforced the Fugitive Slave Act.

Compromise of 1850: A package of U.S. laws addressing slavery and territorial disputes after the Mexican–American War. Fillmore signed its measures, including the Fugitive Slave Act, seeking to contain sectional division.
Zachary Taylor: The 12th president of the United States, who died in office in July 1850. Taylor’s death elevated his vice president, Fillmore, to the presidency.
New York State Assembly: The lower chamber of New York’s state legislature. Fillmore’s early elected office was as a member of this assembly.
