Millennials

Millennials are the demographic generation generally defined as people born from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s or early 2000s. They are also known as Generation Y.

Generation Y: Generation Y is an alternative name for the demographic generation commonly called Millennials. The name captures the cohort’s place after Generation X in common generational labels.
Generation: A generation is a group of people born or coming of age during a particular period and shaped by shared historical conditions. Millennials are defined as a birth cohort, but shared dates do not guarantee shared experiences.

Great Recession: The Great Recession was a severe global economic downturn that began in 2007 and lasted through the late 2000s. Many Millennials entered adulthood or the labor market during its disruption.
Generation X: Generation X is the demographic generation commonly placed before Millennials, usually defined by birth years from the mid-1960s to around 1980. Its boundary with Millennials helps explain why generational start dates vary.
Birth cohort: A birth cohort is a group of people born within a specified period. The term separates Millennials’ demographic definition from claims about their common traits.
U.S. Census Bureau: The U.S. Census Bureau is the federal agency that collects and publishes demographic and economic data about the United States. Its population data provide the counts and age structure behind Millennial demographics.
Generation Alpha: Generation Alpha is the demographic cohort generally defined as people born from the early 2010s onward. It represents the generation commonly placed after Generation Z and far beyond the Millennial birth range.
Student debt: Student debt is money borrowed to pay for education that remains owed after study. Rising education costs and borrowing shaped finances for many Millennials, especially in the United States.
