Milutin Milanković

Milutin Milanković was a Serbian mathematician, astronomer, and climatologist who calculated how variations in Earth’s orbit alter the distribution of sunlight and shape long-term climate.

Milankovitch cycles: Recurring changes in Earth’s orbit and axial orientation that alter the distribution of sunlight reaching the planet. This is the collective name for the orbital variations Milanković quantified.
Summer insolation: The solar energy received during summer at a particular location or latitude. Milanković emphasized weak high-latitude summers as a condition favoring ice-sheet survival.
Canon of Insolation and the Ice-Age Problem: Milanković’s 1941 book presenting his mathematical theory of insolation changes and ice ages. It is the fullest published statement of the theory he developed.
