Mimicry

Mimicry is the imitation of another person, animal, or action. It can resemble a model’s appearance, sounds, movements, or behavior.

Batesian mimicry: A form of biological mimicry in which a harmless species resembles a harmful or unpalatable species. It shows how resemblance can deter predators by borrowing another species’ warning signal.
Model (biology): An organism or object whose traits are copied by a mimic. The model supplies the appearance, sound, or behavior that makes mimicry recognizable.
Social mimicry: The imitation of another person’s gestures, expressions, speech, or behavior in social interaction. It applies the concept to interpersonal behavior rather than species resemblance.
Predator avoidance: Behaviors and traits that reduce an animal’s likelihood of being detected, attacked, or eaten by predators. Defensive mimicry can make a vulnerable animal less likely to be attacked.
Müllerian mimicry: A form of biological mimicry in which multiple harmful or unpalatable species share similar warning signals. Its shared signals differ from deceptive imitation: each species reinforces the others’ warning.
Signal (biology): A trait or action that conveys information to another organism and has evolved to do so. Mimetic traits function as signals when they influence an observer’s response.
Vocal learning: The ability to modify vocalizations by learning from sounds heard from others. Vocal learners can acquire sounds that are later reproduced through vocal mimicry.
Frequency-dependent selection: Natural selection in which a trait’s fitness depends on how common or rare it is. The success of deceptive mimics can decline when predators encounter them too often.
Vocal mimicry: The imitation of sounds, including calls produced by other species or human speech. It demonstrates that mimicry can reproduce sound rather than appearance.
Camouflage: Adaptations that make an organism difficult to detect in its surroundings. Camouflage hides an organism against its background; mimicry makes it resemble something else.
