Min Chinese

Min Chinese is a group of Sinitic languages spoken mainly in Fujian, eastern Guangdong, and Hainan, as well as by Chinese communities overseas. Its varieties are unusually diverse and often not mutually intelligible with one another or with other Chinese languages.

Sinitic languages: A branch of Sino-Tibetan languages that includes Mandarin, Yue, Wu, and Min. Min is one major branch of this language family.
Min initial consonants: The consonant contrasts at the beginnings of syllables in Min varieties. Their preservation and development reveal distinctive patterns within Min.

Teochew: A Min variety spoken mainly in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong and by diaspora communities. Teochew represents Min’s strong presence beyond Fujian.
Yue Chinese: A Sinitic branch that includes Cantonese and other varieties of southern China. Yue is another southern branch, distinct from Min despite geographic proximity.
