Minamata disease

Minamata disease is a neurological disorder caused by severe methylmercury exposure, first identified among residents of Minamata, Japan, in the 1950s. It can damage the nervous system and affect people exposed before birth.

Methylmercury: An organic form of mercury that accumulates in organisms and can damage the nervous system. This toxic compound caused the neurological injury in Minamata disease.
Chisso: A Japanese chemical company that operated a factory in Minamata and discharged methylmercury-contaminated wastewater. Its factory pollution caused the local exposure that produced the outbreak.
Hiroyuki Hosokawa: A Chisso company physician who reported the Minamata disease outbreak to public health authorities in 1956. His report triggered the official investigation despite the company’s role in the pollution.
