Minamoto no Yoritomo

Minamoto no Yoritomo was a Japanese military leader who established the Kamakura shogunate and became its first shogun in 1192.

Minamoto clan: A Japanese warrior clan whose branches competed for power during the late Heian period. Yoritomo inherited the clan name and used its surviving networks to build a military coalition.
Genpei War: A civil war in Japan from 1180 to 1185 between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Yoritomo directed the Minamoto side from the eastern provinces while his relatives led key campaigns.
Battle of Dan-no-ura: A 1185 naval battle in which Minamoto forces defeated the Taira and ended the Genpei War. Its victory eliminated the Taira’s main resistance and cleared the way for Yoritomo’s government.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune: A Minamoto commander celebrated for victories against the Taira during the Genpei War. His battlefield success helped Yoritomo win, but their rivalry ended in Yoshitsune’s pursuit and death.
Taira clan: A powerful Japanese warrior clan that dominated the imperial court before the Genpei War. The Taira defeated Yoritomo’s father and became the target of his later campaign.
Kamakura shogunate: Japan’s first warrior government, established by the Minamoto in Kamakura in the late twelfth century. Yoritomo built this regime to administer warriors and govern alongside the imperial court.

Minamoto no Yoritomo's father: Minamoto no Yoshitomo was a warrior leader defeated in the Heiji Rebellion and killed in 1160. His defeat shaped Yoritomo’s exile and supplied a grievance around which Minamoto followers rallied.
Heiji Rebellion: A 1159 conflict in Kyoto between rival warrior factions that strengthened Taira no Kiyomori’s power. The rebellion led to Yoritomo’s capture and exile after his father’s defeat.
Shugo: A provincial military governor appointed by Japan’s shogunate to oversee security and warrior affairs. Yoritomo’s appointments extended his authority into provinces beyond his eastern base.
